So, every once in a while, your antibodies that normally attack all the germs and whatnot that enter your body freak out and begin to think that your Thyroid gland is an enemy and begin to attack it. The symptoms of this are usually very slow to occur and aren't noticed until the diesease has progressed. This is what my doctor thinks I have.
He took more blood yesterday to try and confirm his diagnoses. In my situation, my OB discovered my large and hardned Thyroid, which is called a Goiter. Doesn't that just roll of the tongue? As he was feeling around my Thyroid, he also felt what might have been a nodule. (Another fun vocabulary word.) Basically it is just a bump or tumor like structure. Once my blood results from yesterday come back, Doctor Winmill will decide if he wants to do one of two test: First, I get to take a slightly radioactive pill which lets them see my thyroid gland and check everything out. Second, I go on an Iodine free diet from 5 days to a month. What does that intel, you ask? Pretty much everything worth eating. Anything with salt goes out the window. LAME! I'm really hoping that we don't proceed with that path. The benefit with both of these test is that Dr. Winmill will be able to see exactly what my thyroid is doing and if I really have a nodule and how big it is. If it is over 1 centimeter, which isn't very big in my book, then they will do a biopsy on it and make sure that it is just a simple growth. It should be a pretty simple treatment with hormone replacement for the hormones that my body can't produce right now. I don't have any serious or frankly noticable symptoms right now, which is good. I am really lucky that this was caught so early. The symptoms are not a pretty list and could really effect not just my physical health, but my mental and emotional health as well.
So that is what happened at my doctor appointment and I was hoping to hear about my blood results today, but I guess it will be tomorrow. I'm sure I'll update the blog as I find out more about what my body is doing. Isn't is amazing that we have all of these things inside of us doing all sorts of things and we are not even slightly aware of it? The only symptom I have is that I swallow loud sometimes. God sure is amazing that he could design such a complex organism! What a new found respect I have for the phrase "God created all things."
