Ablation

That is what we will be doing for my hyperthyroidism. What that means is that they will use radioactive iodine to remove (the everyday word for ablation) the nodule on the left side of my thyroid that is growing so large and producing all the extra hormones. In theory, it is great. This is how it is suppose to go: they give me the exact amount of radiation to kill the naughty part of my thyroid. The right side, which has gone completely inactive, will kick back on and produce the exact right amount. The possible complications: 1- They don't use enough radiation and therefore I need a second treatment. 2-The right side doesn't come back to life and therefore I am now hypothyroid, for which they have pretty safe and normal daily medicine. The down side: I have to be completely isolated from all children and can only be with adults for about 30 minutes at a time. This means that Keldrie will be staying with my mom and Elaine, bless their hearts, while Matt is at work or visiting me. Matt will even have to live at his mom's for those three days because we can't use the same bathroom. So, I'm going to be radioactive. The only other major downside to this over surgery is that I can't get pregnant for a year because of the chance of harm to the baby with the last of the radiation.
Unlike when a cancer patient has radiation, this will be attached to iodine, which only effects your thyroid. So I won't be really sick like most people who have radiation for cancer treatment. The three days of semi-isolation should be somewhat productive. I'm planning on having the last batch of photos developed and get some serious scrapbooking done. Lots of movies, lots of books and lots of cleaning. After all, I won't have to worry about a certain someone following me around and undoing everything 5 minutes later.
No official date yet. We are still talking with doctors and radiation technicians. Hopefully sometime in the next two weeks. I'm sure I'll let you know. And I will probably be on facebook a lot during those few days. Thanks for all everyone's support through all this. If you know any good movies or books, let me know!

  1. Okay I am going to sit here and think of all of my favorite books and movies you may have not seen or read. First do you like the Vampire Diaries the show if so, have you read the books? I have the series and I liked them alot. Gerald Lund's Undaunted was great. I think you have read Hunger Games I am pretty sure we have talked about those before. Anita Stansfield I have a ton of her, and I love her books. Mary Higgins Clark I have a ton of hers as well, she is great. Movies do you like Ann of Green Gables, I love that one and it would take of a lot of time with that and Ann of Avonlea. Gone with the Wind, Sound of Music, these are all of my favorites that I never have time to watch because kids are always around and they are too long. I have all of these so let me know if anything sounds good and I will bring them to you. I am so so glad they have a plan to get you back to normal, it must be such a relief to at least have that in place. Let me know if you need any help with Kel I would love to have her!
